Mother Nature - Autumn in the Vegetable Garden
Posted: 12th September 2025

We can learn so much from Mother Nature. There is what I call the Cycle of Growth. The seasons can teach us how to tend to ourselves - how to manage the "real estate" of our bodies, minds, and souls.

Mother Nature and the season of Autumn

While harvesting begins during the Summer, Autumn is the main harvesting season. We can, of course, plan our sowing so that harvesting is done over more months of the year. Nevertheless, Autumm is when we should harvest the results of our efforts over the previous months. Most vegetables will come to fullness during Autumn, as will fruits, such as plums and apples.

Some of the harvest can be used and eaten immediately. It is wonderful to pick some produce and cook it immediately. It will be so fresh, tasting, and there will be no air miles involved in it reaching our tables.

Some of the harvest can be stored for us in the short-term, whilst, some more may be stored for use over the coming months and even into next year.

When we work with Mother Nature, she provides a bountiful harvest for us. I give thanks for the harvest and, I have been known, to thank the plants and trees directly for their harvest. Yes, I have spoken to my trees and plants. Expressing gratitude gives one a wonderful sense of fulfilment for the time and effort expended. We are privileged to be able to spend some time as custodians of this wonderful planet. We should appreciate that and, hopefully, then future generations can do the same.

Above, and in the previous posts, I refer to tending to ourselves - how to manage the "real estate" of our bodies, minds, and souls. Occasionally, outside influences, such as extreme weather conditions, may interfere with the growing season. However, if we expend the time and effort to plan properly, sow, and care for our seeds and plants, then we will (usually) enjoy a bountiful harvest. Likewise, if we expend time and effort in tending to our bodies, minds, and souls, then we will reap the rewards physically, mentally, and spiritually. Time and effort are required. On a physical level, it may mean maintaining an exercise routine or a diet routine. On a mental level it may mean finding mental stimulation in reading or games, and also socialising and sharing experiences with others, or just talking to people. On a spiritual level it may mean practicing meditation, following a religious practice, or exploring spirituality oneself or, better still, with others. However, the common denominator is that we must put in the time and effort. Our time and energy are limited so choose wisely, and choose those activities from which you will benefit the most.

If we have made improvements and advanced on a physical, mental, or spiritual level then take the time to reflect in the Present and appreciate what we have achieved. That can provide immediate fulfilment.

What we have sown and reaped at a personal level can help to maintain us and see us through the days, and months, and years ahead. It can help us through the dark days of our personal Winters.

Let us tend to our own physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Let us support others as they tend to their physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. Let us give thanks for what we have. “Take the time to smell the roses” and then let us move on.

Follow Mother Nature’s lead - you should be on a continuous Cycle of Growth too.
